April 17, 2012 — Garry Higdem, CH2M HILL's Program Manager, Panama Canal Expansion Program outlines a brief history of the canal as well as what it looks like today. The Panama Canal is a key conduit for international maritime trade. Situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America, the canal was built from 1904 to 1914. It is a 82-kilometre (51 mile) ship canal in Panama joining the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It has been named one of the seven modern wonders of the world by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Since being built, the Panama Canal has seen annual traffic rise from about 1,000 ships early on to 14,702 vessels in 2008. In total, over 815,000 vessels have passed through the canal. Garry Higdem addresses the programme elements of the expansion programme, as well as looking at the drivers behind the decision to expand.

After a 2010 trip to Nicaragua with his two children to assess community needs, Wang connected with Mike Paddock, a colleague at CH2M Hill who sits on the Board of EWB-USA and who, working in conjunction with an organization called Bridges to Prosperity, has helped several student groups with bridge-building projects in Latin America. It was just the connection Wang was looking for, and he went on to mentor an EWB group of students from Rice University who built a bridge in the Carazo and Matagalpa regions of Nicaragua. He’s excited to be launching a similar project with students from Mines.

She excelled in the environmental engineering program, assisting with management of Superfund sites in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency. September 26, 2011 — In one of the largest acquisitions so far this year for a U.S. firm, Colorado-based CH2M Hill Cos., said Sept. 26 that it has agreed to acquire London-based global transportation engineer Halcrow Group Ltd. for about $192 million in cash. The deal, which the Englewood, Colo.-based firm says also includes the U.K. firm's outstanding debt and pension liability, could be valued at more than $356 million.
The transaction, set to close in November, would expand CH2M Hill's global footprint and engineering strength, and improve cash flow lines for privately-held Halcrow as it struggles in some markets. The deal must be approved by Halcrow shareholders and the U.K.'s high court, says the propective parent.

Visibility is reduced to a few feet, but you have a rope line to follow over to the next building and a radio and GPS tucked away in a warm inner pocket. Your breath comes hard in the thin air, as you push your way toward warmth, toward safety. At 72.4 degrees north of the equator and 10,600 feet elevation, Summit is the only high-latitude, high-elevation scientific research platform in the Northern Hemisphere. This is an extreme environment, with temperatures that can dip to -100F in the depths of a sunless winter and rise to just below freezing in the summer when the sun never sets.

He always dreamed of managing his own project, building his own home, but he figured he’d probably have to quit his job in order to do it. But CH2M Hill, a multinational infrastructure engineering firm, agreed to let him work a 3-day week for five months in 2003 so he could build his bungalow in Ottawa’s Revelstoke neighbourhood. Each week he used one vacation day and took one day off without pay.
