April 17, 2012 — Garry Higdem, CH2M HILL's Program Manager, Panama Canal Expansion Program outlines a brief history of the canal as well as what it looks like today. The Panama Canal is a key conduit for international maritime trade. Situated on the isthmus connecting North and South America, the canal was built from 1904 to 1914. It is a 82-kilometre (51 mile) ship canal in Panama joining the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It has been named one of the seven modern wonders of the world by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Since being built, the Panama Canal has seen annual traffic rise from about 1,000 ships early on to 14,702 vessels in 2008. In total, over 815,000 vessels have passed through the canal. Garry Higdem addresses the programme elements of the expansion programme, as well as looking at the drivers behind the decision to expand.

March 28, 2012 — When he retired from the military a few years ago and started to work with CH2M Hill, Wang wanted to find a way to continue applying his skills in the developing world. After a 2010 trip to Nicaragua with his two children to assess community needs, Wang connected with Mike Paddock, a colleague at CH2M Hill who sits on the Board of EWB-USA and who, working in conjunction with an organization called Bridges to Prosperity, has helped several student groups with bridge-building projects in Latin America. It was just the connection Wang was looking for, and he went on to mentor an EWB group of students from Rice University who built a bridge in the Carazo and Matagalpa regions of Nicaragua. He’s excited to be launching a similar project with students from Mines.

A first-generation college student, Yvette Brett graduated from Morgan State University in 2001. That year, she was ranked second among civil engineering grads at Morgan State University. While in college, Yvette began working for the Army Corps of Engineers as a summer hire (1999-2001) and as a co-op student with the Baltimore District. She excelled in the environmental engineering program, assisting with management of Superfund sites in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency. Superfund is the federal government’s program to clean up the nation’s uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.

September 26, 2011 — In one of the largest acquisitions so far this year for a U.S. firm, Colorado-based CH2M Hill Cos., said Sept. 26 that it has agreed to acquire London-based global transportation engineer Halcrow Group Ltd. for about $192 million in cash. The deal, which the Englewood, Colo.-based firm says also includes the U.K. firm's outstanding debt and pension liability, could be valued at more than $356 million.
The transaction, set to close in November, would expand CH2M Hill's global footprint and engineering strength, and improve cash flow lines for privately-held Halcrow as it struggles in some markets. The deal must be approved by Halcrow shareholders and the U.K.'s high court, says the propective parent.

July 07, 2011 — Honoree Margaret McLean is general counsel of engineering and consulting firm CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd., which has been named to Ethisphere's Most Ethical Companies list three times. She says that she consulted with Ethisphere Institute experts a few years ago to update and redesign her company's ethics policies. According to McLean, a policy revamp was necessary after the company grew six-fold in both revenue and size to a $6.3 billion enterprise with 23,500 employees in more than 70 countries.
The new, value-based ethics code addressed issues unique to CH2M HILL's international operations and the work it does for various national governments. Web-based training modules are available 24/7 in several languages. "We really redefined ethics beyond a compliance issue into a competitive differentiator issue," McLean says. "That, in my view, is a major difference for CH2M HILL—we believe that doing business ethically is good for our business and good for our clients' business."

This is an extreme environment, with temperatures that can dip to -100F in the depths of a sunless winter and rise to just below freezing in the summer when the sun never sets.
