Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers: Engineers Week (EWeek)

Engineers Week activities provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn the principles behind water filtration, bridge building, structural engineering, electricity, and renewable energy.

Over 200 CH2M HILL employees participated in Engineers Week 2010. Guiding and mentoring students in how engineering enriches their lives and the lives of countless others around the world.

Engineering is a challenging and rewarding career; however, there is a shortage in the number of students choosing to pursue an engineering career. Within the U.S., science and engineering jobs are in high demand, with these fields growing three times as fast as the growth in the overall employment market, but the number of students graduating with degrees in these industries is lagging behind. The U.S. Department of Labor expects that employment of engineers will grow 11 percent between 2006 and 2016.

Engineers Week (EWeek) aims to change this by increasing understanding of what engineers do and introducing students to the varied and exciting opportunities the engineering field has to offer. Through hands-on activities and face-to-face interactions with students from Kindergarten through college, CH2M HILL’s EWeek volunteers share their passion for engineering and show students how engineers use problem-solving, teamwork, and math and science skills to develop the innovative solutions which are improving quality of life in their communities.

CH2M HILL has supported EWeek since 1997 as the firm's flagship science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education outreach program. Each February hundreds of employees from CH2M HILL offices across North America volunteer their time to serve as mentors, teachers, and judges in a variety of activities, including engineering competitions, technology and science fairs, classroom presentations, hands-on activities, and project site visits. By engaging students in activities which help them understand how science, math, and technology can be used to solve real world problems and make a difference in society, CH2M HILL is helping to inspire the next generation of engineers.

In addition to EWeek, our employees are actively engaged in programmes which reach out to K-12 students year-round. These programmes include:

CH2M HILL Engineers Week

"As part of our presentation, we challenged the kids to come up with one thing which an engineer was not involved with creating. Kids came up with things like paper and trucks. In all cases but one, where the student shared 'a spider web' as an answer, we were able to explain how engineers were involved," says Randy Smith, President of CH2M HILL’s Industrial & Advanced Technology Business Group.

The National Engineers Week Foundation, a formal coalition of more than 100 professional societies, major corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. Celebrated the third week of February, Engineers Week also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineers' contributions to society. Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), it is among the oldest of America's professional outreach efforts.
